Franklinton Rising has been rebuilding boarded-up vacant houses and building ground-up new duplexes as affordable housing since 2015. We commit to a neighborhood, and then continue building one or two buildings at a time.
Growth in Columbus requires significant additional affordable housing for people earning 40% to 80% of the County's median income. Franklinton Rising is focusing on existing neighborhoods and vacant lots where duplexes with two to four bedrooms can be built.
Building homes to support affordable living.
The construction provides not only an opportunity to train our apprentices but also to build unique, affordable housing. Franklinton Rising buildings are constructed with very high levels of wall and ceiling insulation. Plus, with solar panels on the buildings' roofs, tenant annual utility costs in these all-electric units are reduced by 50%-75% compared to units without extra insulation and solar panels. All first-floor units are all handicap accessible with rear parking.
Homes that respect the neighborhood and support the people who live there.
Units are built in a style that preserves the neighborhood's architectural integrity and enhances its beauty. Newer units are designed to provide residences that can be expanded to include more bedrooms and bathrooms to accommodate large or extended families.
Franklinton Rising is implementing community services to support tenants in each neighborhood, including property maintenance, home care training, and connections with other tenants to build support and a sense of community.
